UK Launches Swine Flu Help Site

(Reuters) - Britain is being hit hard by the flu pandemic. That's according to health experts who say it's due to the country being a major travel destination. The government has launched a National Flu Pandemic service to help battle the virus. Workers at this call centre are helping diagnose the disease, offering advice to callers. There's also an online site where you can get the Tamiflu drug without a doctor's prescription.

But there are concerns the service will be abused. Steve Field is from the Royal College of General Practitioners. "Of course patients could ring in or use the website and say they have got influenza when they haven't, but actually, first of all, won't do them any good, but secondly, that is a disservice to other people who might need the Tamiflu." The website and telephone service have been overwhelmed.

Around 500 more people could be recruited to join the 1500 staff in the centre. The number of people with the H1N1 virus practically doubled last week. At least 31 people in Britain have died from the virus. But doctors say the victims had previously been unwell. "The majority of them have underlying illnesses which made them more susceptible to serious complications of flu."

Health experts say it's only a matter of time until the H1N1 flu wave sweeps through other European countries. They're warning other states to be prepared for a similar or increasing number of cases.
