VOA - A United Nations committee says women must play an active part in all areas of the emergency¹ aid effort in Haiti. The message was part of a statement released by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. Committee Chair Naéla Mohamed Gabr said women face great responsibilities² following a disaster such as the Haitian earthquake. This is because they traditionally care for children, the very old, and the injured. Ms Gabr noticed³ that when lawlessness and homelessness increase, women face  an increase threat of

violence and find it more difficult to support themselves. She says better systems need to be in place to protect women and children.

1. emergency (a) a sudden serious and dangerous event or situation which needs immediate action to deal with it: khẩn cấp

- noticed at once: chú ý ngay lập tức

Một ủy ban của Liên Hiệp Quốc đã phát biểu về vai trò tích cực của phụ nữ ở mọi lĩnh vực trong nỗ lực cứu trợ khẩn cấp ở Haiti. Thông điệp trên là một phần trong lời phát biểu của Ủy ban Chống phân biệt đối xử với Phụ nữ. Bà Naéla Mohamed Gabr, Chủ tịch Ủy ban cho biết phụ nữ phải đảm nhận trọng trách lớn sau thảm họa như trận động đất ở Haiti vừa rồi bởi vì theo truyền thống phụ nữ thường chăm sóc trẻ em, người già, và người bị thương. Bà Gabr cũng lưu ý khi tình trạng hỗn loạn và vô gia cư tăng cao, phụ nữ phải đối mặt với nguy cơ bạo lực gia tăng và khó có thể chăm sóc bản thân. Bà cũng cho biết những hệ thống bảo vệ phụ nữ và trẻ em cần được thực hiện tốt hơn.
